Effect of Spur Bud Scales on Flower Differentiation inside the Spur Bud in Apple Tree

Abstract

|
|
In order to know the role of spur bud scales on flower differentiation inside the spur bud in apple tree, relationship between number of spur bud scales and size of spur bud, effect of spur leaves on spur bud scale development, and removal effect of outer bud scales on flower differentiation were investigated. No correlation existed between number of bud scales and size of spur bud except the Starkrimson cultivar. There was a little difference in the number of spur bud scales between flower differentiated bud and flower non-differentiated bud. Spur leaves seemed to have little effect on initiation of bud seals because spur leaf defoliation later than May 15 did not affect on the number of bud scales inside the defoliated spur bud. Number of spur bud scales varied with cultivars showing the Fuji cultivar had the lowest number of spur bud scales. Removal of spur bud scales in July influenced on flower differentiation but it was not critical. It is concluded that spur bud scales are likely to have a role on flower organ differentiation but they have not critical effect.
